With a specific gravity of 0.9, PP is the lightest among thermoplastics. PP has good chemical stability, similar to polyethylene, solvent can not dissolve PP at room temperature, only some halogenated compounds, aromatics and high boiling point aliphatic hydrocarbons can make it swell, to dissolve PP at high temperature. PP is easier to be oxidized than PE, because there are many tertiary carbon atoms with methyl group on its main chain, and the hydrogen on tertiary carbon atoms is vulnerable to attack by oxygen. Therefore, when applying powder PP, we should pay attention to this point. Because there is methyl group in the main chain of PP, methyl group is larger than hydrogen atom in volume and steric hindrance, so the glass transition temperature of PP is higher than PE. PP has good heat resistance, can be used at 130℃, can be used for boiling disinfection, as heat-resistant pipe, cooking food packaging film, medical equipment, etc. The brittleness temperature is -35℃. PP is a non-polar crystalline polymer with excellent electrical properties and can be used as high frequency electrical insulation material. Electrical insulation is also good in humid environments. PP has low water permeability, low air permeability and high shrinkage rate. Unmodified PP is not suitable for engineering parts. PP resistance to fatigue bending performance is good, can bend 100,000 times, stronger than the general plastic, so it can be used to manufacture movable hinges.
