What material is hdpe?

HDPE is an opaque white waxy material with a specific gravity lighter than water, with a specific gravity of 0.941~0.960. It is soft and tough, but slightly harder than LDPE and slightly stretchable. It is non-toxic and tasteless. It is a product of polymerization under low pressure conditions catalyzed by Ziegler catalyst, so high-density polyethylene is also called low-pressure polyethylene.

The unique properties of various grades of HDPE are the appropriate combination of four basic variables: density, molecular weight, molecular weight distribution and additives. Different catalysts are used to produce polymers with customized special properties. These variables are combined to produce HDPE grades for different uses; achieving the best balance of properties.

HDPE is known for its large strength to density ratio. The density of HDPE can range from 930 to 970 kg/m3. Although the density of HDPE is only marginally higher than that of low-density polyethylene, HDPE has little branching, giving it stronger intermolecular forces and tensile strength than LDPE. The difference in strength exceeds the difference in density, giving HDPE a higher specific strength. It is also harder and more opaque and can withstand somewhat higher temperatures (120°C/ 248 °F for short periods).

Polyethylene is an electrical insulator, so it does not rot, rust, or corrode electrochemically. In addition, it does not promote the growth of algae, bacteria or fungi.

5. Aging resistance, long service life: the polyethylene pipe contains 2-2.5% uniform distribution of carbon black, can be stored in the outdoor or used for 50 years, will not be damaged by ultraviolet radiation.

6. Good wear resistance: The wear resistance comparison test of HDPE pipe and steel pipe shows that the wear resistance of HDPE pipe is 4 times that of steel pipe. In the field of mud transfer, HDPE has better wear resistance compared to steel pipe, which means that HDPE pipe has a longer service life and better economy.

7. Good flexibility: The flexibility of HDPE pipeline makes it easy to bend, and obstacles can be bypassed by changing the direction of the pipeline in engineering. In many cases, the flexibility of the pipe can reduce the number of fittings and reduce installation costs.

8. Low water resistance: The HDPE tube has a smooth inner surface and a Manning coefficient of 0.009. Smooth performance and non-adhesion ensure that HDPE pipes deliver higher throughput than conventional pipes, while reducing pressure loss and water consumption.
