Basic performance of PP

1. PP physical properties

Non-toxic, odorless, tasteless opalescent high crystalline polymer with a relative molecular weight of about 80,000-150,000.

Low density: 890-910kg/m3, is one of the lightest plastic varieties.

Strong hydrophobicity: water absorption rate of 24h is only 0.01%.

Formability is good, but the shrinkage rate is large, thick wall products are easy to sag. Product surface luster is good, easy to color.

2. Mechanical properties

PP has excellent mechanical properties due to its high crystallinity and regular structure. However, at room temperature and low temperature, due to the high degree of molecular structure regularity, so the impact strength is poor. The most outstanding performance of PP is the resistance to bending fatigue.

3. Thermal performance

PP has good heat resistance, products can be sterilized at more than 100℃ temperature, in the condition of no external force, 150℃ does not deformation. Embrittlement temperature is -35℃, below -35℃ will occur embrittlement, cold resistance is not as good as PE.

The increase of isometric or decrease of molecular weight is beneficial to the improvement of thermal properties.

4. Chemical stability

The chemical stability of PP is very good, in addition to being eroded by concentrated sulfuric acid, concentrated nitric acid, other chemical reagents are relatively stable; But low molecular weight aliphatic hydrocarbon, aromatic hydrocarbon and chlorinated hydrocarbon can make polypropylene softening and swelling, at the same time its chemical stability with the increase of crystallinity and improve, so PP is suitable for making a variety of chemical pipes and accessories, corrosion prevention effect is good.

5. Electrical performance

The high frequency insulation performance of PP is excellent, because it almost does not absorb water, so the insulation performance is not affected by humidity. It has a high dielectric coefficient, and with the rise of temperature, can be used to make heated electrical insulation products. Its breakdown voltage is also very high, suitable for use as electrical accessories. Good voltage resistance, arc resistance, but high electrostatic degree. Due to the existence of lateral methyl in PP, tertiary carbon atoms alternately appear on the molecular chain, and tertiary carbon atoms are very easy to oxidized when in contact with copper ions, resulting in poor oxidation resistance and radiation resistance of polypropylene. Therefore, in the use of copper contact, copper inhibitors must be added.

6. Weather resistance

PP is very sensitive to UV, so it is necessary to add additives to improve its aging resistance. Ultraviolet absorbent and ultraviolet quenching agent are commonly used. What needs to be specifically pointed out here is the brittleness and toughness transition temperature of PP.
